Overview of UK Student Visas
The UK Student visa (formerly Tier 4) allows international students to study at recognised educational institutions in the United Kingdom. Whether you're pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, or professional qualifications, understanding the visa requirements is essential for a successful application.
Eligibility Requirements
1. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
Before applying, you must have a valid CAS from a licensed Student sponsor (your university or college). The CAS must:
- Be issued no more than 6 months before your application
- Contain accurate information about your course
- Include your personal details correctly
2. Financial Requirements
You must prove you can support yourself financially:
- Course fees: First year's fees (or full fees if less than a year)
- Living costs: £1,334 per month in London, £1,023 outside London
- Funds held for 28 consecutive days: In your bank account or official financial sponsor
3. English Language
You must demonstrate English proficiency at the required level (B2 for degree courses). This can be through:
- Approved Secure English Language Test (SELT)
- Degree taught in English from a majority English-speaking country
- Being a national of a majority English-speaking country
Application Process
Step 1: Receive Your CAS
Once you've accepted an unconditional offer and paid any deposit, your institution will issue your CAS.
Step 2: Apply Online
Complete the online application at gov.uk. You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts.
Step 3: Gather Documents
Required documents typically include:
- Valid passport
- CAS reference number
- Financial evidence
- English language test certificate
- Tuberculosis test results (if applicable)
Step 4: Attend Biometrics Appointment
Visit a visa application centre to provide fingerprints and photograph.
Step 5: Wait for Decision
Standard processing takes approximately 3 weeks. Priority services are available.

- Application fee: £490 (outside UK)
- Immigration Health Surcharge: £776 per year of study
- Priority service (optional): Additional fees apply
Working While Studying
Student visa holders can work:
- Term time: Up to 20 hours per week
- Holidays: Full-time
- Work placements: As part of your course
After Your Studies: Graduate Route
The Graduate visa allows you to stay and work in the UK after completing your degree:
- 2 years: For undergraduate and master's graduates
- 3 years: For PhD graduates
- No sponsorship required
- Work in any job at any skill level
