What is a UK Student Visa?

The Student visa (formerly known as Tier 4 General Student visa) allows international students to study full-time courses at approved UK educational institutions. The Student route is part of the UK's points-based immigration system, requiring applicants to demonstrate they meet specific criteria to be granted entry.

Key Benefits of a Student Visa

  • Permission to study your full course at your sponsoring institution
  • Limited work rights during term time and full-time work during holidays
  • Ability to bring dependants (for certain courses and levels)
  • Access to the Graduate visa route after completing your studies
  • Access to NHS healthcare (after paying the Immigration Health Surcharge)

Student Visa Requirements

To qualify for a UK Student visa, you must meet several mandatory requirements:

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

You must have a CAS from a UK educational institution that holds a Student sponsor licence. The CAS is an electronic record containing details of:

  • Your personal information
  • The course you will study
  • The start and end dates of your course
  • Your tuition fees and any amounts already paid
  • Evidence used to assess your qualifications and English level

English Language Requirement

You must prove your English language ability at the level required by your course. The minimum level depends on the type of course:

  • Degree level and above: B2 level (CEFR)
  • Below degree level: B1 level (CEFR)

Ways to Prove English Language

  • IELTS for UKVI academic test (or other approved Secure English Language Test)
  • GCSE/A-Level/Scottish Highers in English
  • Degree taught in English in a majority English-speaking country (with UK ENIC confirmation)
  • National of a majority English-speaking country
  • Institution's own assessment (for degree-level courses at certain sponsors)

Financial Requirements Breakdown

You must demonstrate you have sufficient funds to pay your course fees and support yourself in the UK. This is one of the most important aspects of your application.

What Funds Do You Need?

Tuition Fees

You need to show you have enough money to pay your first year's tuition fees (or total fees if your course is less than one year). If you have already paid some or all of your fees, you only need to show funds for the outstanding amount.

Living Costs (Maintenance)

You must show you can support yourself for up to 9 months:

  • Studying in London: ¶œ1,334 per month (¶œ12,006 for 9 months)
  • Studying outside London: ¶œ1,023 per month (¶œ9,207 for 9 months)

Example: Studying in Manchester

For a course with ¶œ15,000 tuition fees, studying in Manchester:

  • Tuition fees: ¶œ15,000
  • Living costs (9 months at ¶œ1,023): ¶œ9,207
  • Total required: ¶œ24,207

Evidence of Funds

You can use:

  • Bank statements showing funds held for at least 28 consecutive days
  • Official financial sponsorship letter from government, institution, or international organisation
  • Student loan from government body

The 28-day period must end within 31 days of your visa application date.

Working Rights While Studying

One of the benefits of a UK Student visa is the ability to work. Your work rights depend on your course level and the type of work:

During Term Time

  • Full-time degree level courses: Up to 20 hours per week
  • Below degree level courses: Up to 10 hours per week
  • Part-time courses: Work not permitted

During Holidays

During official university/college holidays, you can work full-time without restriction.

Placement Work

If your course includes a work placement, this is permitted under your student visa and does not count towards your work limits.

Work Restrictions

You cannot:

  • Be self-employed or run a business
  • Work as a professional sportsperson or entertainer
  • Take a full-time permanent job

One of the most attractive aspects of studying in the UK is the Graduate visa, which allows you to stay and work after completing your degree.

What is the Graduate Visa?

The Graduate visa is an unsponsored work visa that allows you to work (or look for work) in the UK after completing an eligible course. You do not need a job offer to apply.

Graduate Visa Duration

  • PhD or other doctoral qualification: 3 years

Graduate Visa Requirements

  • Successfully completed your course in the UK on a Student visa
  • Your education provider has reported your successful completion
  • You are in the UK when you apply
  • Your current visa must not have expired

Graduate Visa Benefits

  • Freedom to switch jobs and employers
